A Closer Look | PhytoMAX-3
Phyto-Genesis Spectrum®
Through research and over a decade of experimentation, we have discovered the mixture of colors plants need to thrive- not just
survive. Starting with PAR (Photosynthetically Active Radiation from 400nm to 700nm, originally believed to be all plants used for
photosynthesis), we added ultraviolet and infrared outside of the PAR range to elevate plants’ growth to create our Phyto-Genesis
Spectrum. Newer research has shown that infrared light enhances photosynthetic efficiency (the Emerson Effect), and that ultraviolet
light also contributes to photosynthesis while also offering many other benefits. Our spectrum has specific ratios of different colors of
light to manipulate plant morphology to maximize flower and fruit production per square foot.
Ultraviolet
Our Phyto-Genesis Spectrum has 3.3% ultraviolet (UV) light, slightly more than natural sunlight, which:
· Penetrates dense canopies better to increase yield and quality of buds lower in the canopy.
· Maximizes trichome production.
· Increases production of cannabinoids, terpenes and pigmentation.
· Stimulates the plant to stay more compact, reducing stem length and leaving more energy for flowers and fruit.
· Stimulates the plant to create a thicker cuticle (“skin”) for more pathogen, pest and drought resistance.
Yield
By optimizing the spectrum for plants grown for flowers or fruit, our lights reduce apical dominance and internodal spacing,
growing shorter, bushier plants which put their energy into growing flowers and fruit instead of stems. Combined with specific
spectral ratios to control leaf size and maximize canopy penetration, our lights routinely yield double to more than triple the
industry standard per square foot.

Inclusion of UV light increases trichome production, as well as lab-proven increases in cannabinoids and terpenes, resulting
in higher-quality flowers and increased extract yields.
HVAC Savings
So-called “full spectrum” white LEDs are designed to maximize spectral efficiency for human eyes, not plants. When looking
at the photosynthetic efficiency by wavelength for plants, it becomes obvious that these white LEDs put much of their energy
into areas less efficiently utilized by plants, such as yellow and green light, which heats up leaf surfaces.
Because we don’t waste energy on colors of light that heat up plants’ leaves, with PhytoMAX-3 lights you need to allow a higher
temperature in your grow room to get the same Leaf Surface Temperature (LST). Our recommendation is 85 °F without CO2
supplementation and 86-88 °F with CO2
to have the same LST and metabolic growth rates you would under an HPS or white LEDs
running 10 degrees cooler. Running warmer typically saves 60% or more on cooling costs.
PAR, PBAR and PPFD Explained
PAR
PAR, which stands for Photosynthetic Active Radiation, arbitrarily
designates the light spectrum range between 400nm-700nm
as being useful for photosynthesis, even though scientists
have proven light outside this range drives photosynthesis and
affects plant physiology. IR light (700-750nm) has been proven
to increase photosynthetic efficiency (the Emerson Effect), and
UV light (below 400nm) is used for photosynthesis while also
increasing canopy penetration and production of terpenes and
cannabinoids.
PBAR
Photobiologically Active Radiation (PBAR) is a newer standard that
incorporates wavelengths from 280nm-800nm that have been
shown to be biologically active in plants. This recognizes that light
outside of the traditional PAR range is useful to plants, which is why
our Phyto-Genesis Spectrum goes Beyond PAR and into the PBAR
range!
PPFD
PPFD stands for Photosynthetic Photon Flux Density and is a
measurement of the intensity of light in the 400-700nm range
in a particular area. PPFD is usually expressed in micromoles of
light photons per square meter per second, but does not include
UV or IR photons.
It is critical to evaluate PPFD over the entire lighting footprint,
including areas that may seem to be less important because
they are on the perimeter. This is why we give averaged PPFD
levels measured over every square inch of our advertised
footprints, edge-to-edge and corner-to-corner, not just from
the center or a handful of locations.
